Aging is a fact of life but aging gracefully doesn’t mean accepting every downside that comes with it. Whether through a healthy diet, getting enough sleep and exercise, or using more sunscreen, there are plenty of ways we can mitigate many of the effects aging can have on our bodies. In the case of your skin, aging leads to a reduction of the natural fat beneath your skin. This loss leads to an increase of the lines and wrinkles around your face, as well as decreased firmness, often starting at a much younger age than expected. Our skin also stretches, and in many cases, we also develop skin damage from years of exposure to the sun. Fortunately, we now know about the importance of limiting sun damage and have a variety of nonsurgical methods to help limit or eliminate the visual signs of aging. In the article, we’ll focus on one of the most popular: Dermal Fillers.

What are Dermal Fillers?

“Dermal Filler” is a term used to describe a variety of injectable treatments that offer an effective, convenient, and more affordable alternative to some surgical procedures, reducing signs of aging in your skin (or “dermis”). Dermal fillers rejuvenate and plump the skin from beneath the surface, lifting it while restoring volume and lost collagen for a more youthful appearance. And while they don’t provide permanent results, dermal fillers have the potential to restore skin for several months – even up to a year or more – and can be repeated as needed.

The benefits of Dermal Fillers at a glance:

  • Smooth and reduce deep, moderate, and superficial lines in the face
  • Restore areas of volume lost to aging
  • Lift and plump tissues for younger-looking volume and reduced fine lines
  • Sculpt and rejuvenate facial features
  • Define lip borders, add volume, and erase lines in the lip area
  • Enhance shallow contours

Dermal fillers also offer benefits over traditional surgical lifting procedures, such as:

  • No need for general anesthesia or sedation, and the side effects that come with them.
  • No incisions or sutures means no scarring
  • Shorter, often immediate healing times for less time away from family, work, and other commitments
  • Often little to no discomfort from injections
  • Fewer associated risks
  • Often more affordable

Types of Injectable Fillers

  • Juvederm is a popular filler for quickly plumping facial tissues and smoothing out wrinkles, as well as adding volume around the jawline and cheeks. Results can last from six months up to a year before injections need to be re-administered.
  • Juvederm Ultra was developed specifically for facial lines around the mouth and nose, and is used to plump deep creases, create symmetry, and fill out moderate depressions in the cheeks. Results can last between four to six months, and it is especially effective on mouth-to-chin and nose-to-mouth lines.
  • Juvederm Ultra Plus XC is a thicker version of Juvederm, and is FDA approved for more severe creases and wrinkles, lifting and smoothing aging skin dramatically. Because the injections are deeper, to ensure patient comfort this filler is administered along with lidocaine, a common local anesthetic. Results can last from six months to a year.
  • Juvederm Volbella is designed especially for lips, using an advanced Hyaluronic Acid formula. But don’t let the term “acid” dissuade you; this is a naturally occurring substance already found in your body. Volbella is used to augment the lips and smooth out lines for natural-looking results which last for up to six months.
  • Juvederm Voluma was specifically developed to restore volume in the cheeks and lower regions of the face, utilizing a thicker gel for added definition and facial contouring. Voluma is premixed with lidocaine, making the treatment virtually painless, with results lasting for as long as two years.
  • Juvederm Vollure was developed for moderate to deep facial folds like the nasolabial area, or the lines that run from the corner of your nose to the corner of your mouth. This FDA approved filler is also premixed with lidocaine for patient comfort, with results lasting 18 months and often longer.
  • Restylane was one of the first available fillers, and it is still widely used to plump up wrinkled skin. Premixed with lidocaine to make the injections pain-free, Restylane can be used to fill scars as well as plump nasiolabial folds and “marionette lines,” which run down from the corners of your mouth. Results usually last for up to nine months.

Dermal Filler Safety: Are you a good candidate?

  • Most fillers are created from (HA) Hyaluronic Acid or (CaH) Calcium Hydroxylapatite. While that may sound a bit intimidating, both are biocompatible ways to treat wrinkles, and all of our dermal fillers are FDA-approved to help ensure patient safety. This means that the Food and Drug Administration has approved all of our dermal fillers as a means of rejuvenating the appearance of the skin without invasive surgery or lengthy healing.

Good candidates for dermal fillers are generally healthy and do not have active infections or diseases of the skin. During your consultation, you’ll learn how dermal fillers can improve your appearance and receive an individual recommendation based on your skin type and needs.

And while dermal fillers may transform your appearance and improve your self-esteem, we also recommend taking other steps toward maintaining a healthy, youthful appearance, including getting 7-8 hours of sleep a night, avoiding over exposure to the sun, and quitting smoking.
