What is SkinPen®?
SkinPen® is an FDA-approved microneedling device called a dermal roller. When your Stadia Med Spa provider rolls the SkinPen® over your skin, twelve tiny needles create thousands of tiny micro-injuries in the tissue and encourage the body’s natural healing process.
As the SkinPen® microneedles penetrate the skin’s surface, they trigger a natural immune response in your cells. The skin cells naturally start to disinfect, remove debris, increase blood flow, and activate the creation of new tissue.
The new skin that forms is rich in collagen and elastin. These proteins improve skin quality, visibly reduce facial acne scars and neck wrinkles, and leave skin smoother, more radiant, and younger-looking. Fine lines, dark spots, and scarring are reduced and sometimes eliminated.

The micro-injuries rev up the body’s production of collagen and elastin without creating scar tissue. In fact, microneedling is a cosmetic treatment often used to break up scar tissue.

What to Expect
The first step is your free consultation.
Stadia MedSpa offers a free consultation to determine if the SkinPen® is the ideal treatment for you. During your consultation, a treatment provider will carefully examine your face, neck, chest, and hands to check for the kind of scarring, dark spots, and wrinkles that can be treated with the SkinPen®.
At this time, they may suggest additional treatments or another treatment altogether to ensure that you achieve optimal results!
Before Treatment
On the day of treatment, thoroughly wash your face and do not apply any make-up, lotions, sunscreen, or other cosmetics to the treatment area. Avoid direct sun exposure and tanning for a week before your appointment. If you have an active infection or acne flare-up in the treatment area, you will need to reschedule.
Hydrate well in the 48 hours before your treatment for optimal results! Tell your Stadia Med Spa practitioner about any prescriptions, herbal supplements, and medications that may interfere with your treatment. You may need to stop anti-inflammatory medications before and after microneedling as they may interfere with your healing and results.
During Treatment
The SkinPen® procedure may last anywhere from 30 to 90 minutes depending on the size of your treatment area and skincare goals.
Before they start, your SkinPen® provider may apply a topical anesthetic to the skin before microneedling. The topical numbing agent makes the SkinPen® procedure comfortable and relatively pain-free.
Most people report feeling a slight vibration. At Stadia Med Spa, your comfort is of the utmost importance. Your provider will regularly check in to make sure you are tolerating the procedure well. However, most clients rate the pain from microneedling a 1 out of 10 – less painful than having your eyebrows waxed!
The number of SkinPen® procedures required will be determined by your skin care professional based on your individual goals and the health of your skin. Most patients receive a series of three SkinPen® procedures about four weeks apart. You may need as many as six treatments for your ideal results.
After Treatment
SkinPen® is a minimally-invasive procedure with very little downtime. Redness and swelling are common and should resolve within 48 hours. Do not apply anything to the skin for 6 to 8 hours after treatment, including make-up, SPF, or skincare products of any kind.
The micro-channels are open for about 24 hours following your micro-needling procedure so it’s particularly important not to use skincare products that will irritate your skin or hinder the skin rejuvenation process. You don’t want irritating ingredients to prolong the inflammation after your SkinPen® procedure.
For best results post-micro-needling, use the Skinfuse post-micro-needling protocol. SkinPen® is effective for all skin types and tones. Unlike other cosmetic microneedling devices, the SkinPen® doesn’t change the skin’s pigmentation. Therefore, it can be used on all skin types and tones, including darker skin that’s more susceptible to hyperpigmentation.

The total healing time depends on each individual. Most patients have slight swelling and redness/pinkness (like a mild to moderate sunburn) for two to four days following the micro-needling procedure. Some people heal in 24 hours.
Your clinician may apply Skinfuse RESCUE Calming Complex immediately post-procedure to soothe your skin and reduce inflammation. RESCUE was formulated by Bellus Medical as part of the Skinfuse post-procedure protocol specifically to calm the skin following the SkinPen® microneedling. Most people can return to their normal activities and conceal any side effects with makeup just one day after their SkinPen® procedure.
You should expect your SkinPen® results to last for three to six months. These results can be prolonged with regular maintenance visits after you complete your original treatment course.
In some cases, SkinPen® results can be permanent. The longevity of your results will depend on your body’s ability to hold onto collagen, the severity of your skin issue, and how well you care for your skin after your treatment.
SkinPen® microneedling costs will depend on the size of the treatment area and your exact skincare goals. The average SkinPen® cost is between $100 and $600 a treatment. Most clients require 3 to 6 treatments to meet their goals.
